In January 2011, local community members gathered at the Chabad Center as the first few verses of the Torah were inscribed on parchment. The task was continued by a Jerusalem scribe to be completed in Omaha at the Unity Torah Dedication.
Every community member is encouraged to endow a letter of their own to secure their place in this historic scroll.
On September 20, 2012, the final letters of the Unity Torah will be inscribed at the JCC. The Torah will then be paraded to its new home at the Chabad Center amid much fanfare.
The Torah is the most holy object in Jewish life. This G‑d given gift was the blueprint for Creation and is the guide to our lives. For 3,324 years it has been passed down - unchanged - from father to son, mother to daughter. From the darkest of times to the brightest of hours, the Torah ensures Jewish continuity.
The Torah is not merely a symbol of Jewish survival nor a living relic. It is more than just a history or rulebook. The Torah is Judaism.
The Torah is our very life.
Every soul is represented by a letter in the Torah. If even one letter - one soul - is missing, the Torah is not fit for use.
Indeed, the final mitzvah of the Torah is the commandment to write a Torah for oneself. This underscores the personal connection each soul has to the Torah. A Torah for each person seems a near impossible task; it takes a trained professional more than a year to complete. It requires more than 50 sheets of parchment, homemade ink and is written in ancient Hebrew with a quill!
Our sages teach us that by purchasing even one letter of a Torah, G‑d considers it as if you wrote the entire scroll!. Every letter is vital. Your letter is the most important one in the Torah!
