Chabad to Honor Two Couples at Chai Anniversary Event
By Carol Hutchison, for Chabad of Nebraska
Chabad of Nebraska is planning an elegant evening of celebration and tribute to mark the 18th anniversary of Omaha’s Chabad House. The event--on Wednesday, Sept. 14--will honor two special couples who are committed to the ideals which Chabad represents. Dr. Harold Maurer, Chancellor of the UNMC and his wife Beverly will be the recipients of the “Chai Leadership Award”. Leonard and Shirley Goldstein will be the recipients of the “My Brother’s Keeper Award”.

“Dr. and Mrs. Maurer are great visionaries,” said Rabbi Mendel Katzman, founder and spiritual leader of Chabad of Nebraska. “They have given of their heart and soul to improve the quality of life of countless individuals, both physically and spiritually. We share a personal comradeship, as well as professional solidarity.”
Dr. Maurer has helped to build a great institution that seeks to cure illness and improve the quality of life for millions. Beverly has given selflessly to the community with her volunteer work with a plethora of institutions here in Nebraska.
In a troubled time of Jewish history, Leonard and Shirley Goldstein understood the meaning of taking action. Their persistent, intelligent, committed work on behalf of our oppressed brothers in the former Soviet Union gave hope where none existed. Activists such as the Goldsteins helped turn international attention on this quiet, desperate problem. Today over one million Soviet Jews have immigrated to Israel where they can practice their religion in freedom and fulfillment. Chabad’s relationship with the Goldsteins goes back many years.

“The Goldsteins were the first to welcome Chabad to Omaha 18 years ago,” Rabbi Katzman added. “It is our privilege to honor these unique individuals. Each couple in their own way has put Nebraska on the international map!”
The event, chaired by Tom and Darlynn Fellman and Joe and Maxine Kirshenbaum, promises to be an unforgettable gala and will showcase the numerous ways which Chabad has enhanced and strengthened our community.
Chabad of Nebraska helps strengthen our Jewish Community by nurturing the relationship of Jews and G-d in ways that are fresh, fun, relevant and educational. Chabad sponsors celebrations of Jewish holidays such as the Shofar Factory, the Model Matza Bakery, Hanukkah on the Malls and provides Jewish learning for all from toddlers to teens to adults and seniors.
